It is more of a list telling you what Toys R Us wants to be the top selling’s gifts for your kids for the holiday season. ?However, if you survey kids and ask them what they want for Christmas and you get a totally different list. iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad rank the top of a recent survey compared to Bananagrams on some toy stores hot-list items.?

However, instead of taking hints from companies what your children want for Christmas, why don’t you ask them?

Grab the Sears catalogue, or some other sort of flyer that comes in the mail, and ask your children to circle what they want for Christmas.? Use colour coding if you have more than one child circling in the flyer.? You may be surprised to know what they want or don’t want for Christmas.? Your child is a unique individual who may not fit the “want” standards put out by a toy company, that’s why you need to ask them.

Another option, depending on the age of your child, is to have them make a list of what they want.? I realize this may take the “surprise” out of Christmas.? At least they will know they are getting something they want, and the surprise will be which items off of the list they will be getting.

If you have infants and toddlers who can’t express what they want for Christmas, maybe consider what you are buying them for Christmas.? Chances are they probably won’t remember what you get them; so don’t be over elaborate in what you buy them.? Maybe consider wrapping up diapers, wipes, bibs, or other infant needs as presents for your infant.? Your toddler probably has expressed interest in a theme, like Dora the Explorer or Toy Story; if that is the case, get them something related to that theme.

By asking your children what they want for Christmas, you prevent getting them something that has a one-day novelty and then is placed on the shelf or in the closet for the rest of their childhood.? So go ahead, and get a list from them.

The Gay Parenthood Debate

Gay parenthood has become the new frontier (along with gay marriage, etc.), and many scholarly studies are concluding that children have the same developmental outcomes when raised by gay parents as when raised by a heterosexual married couple. Other scholars argue that the sex of the parent really doesn't matter. As long as you have one caring adult (i.e., parent), you have normal outcomes (e.g., Silverstein and Auerbach, etc.). I find it hard to believe that the sex of your parents wouldn't matter at all--at least in some domain of development. Perhaps what this debate really comes down to is a moral stand point and not a child development issue. Quite possibly heterosexual parenting matters because of what it does to both children and parents reciprocally, as parents learn from children and vice versa, and perhaps because of what it does to the character of those involved. Could it be that the effects cannot be seen by social science or the "naked eye?"

Maybe it is the practice of homosexuality that is actually the problem, not the fact that they are acting as parents. As Latter-day Saints, I do not see how we can uphold gay marriage or gay parenting on any moral grounds. Indeed, it is our belief that "marriage between a man and woman is ordained of God" and that children are entitled to birth within the bonds of holy matrimony (LDS Proclamation, 1995). To us, having homosexual tendencies is not a sin; however, acting on them and bringing children into the mix is.

In 1998, President Gordon B. Hinckley of the LDS Church said:

"People inquire about our position on those who consider themselves so-called gays and lesbians. My response is that we love them as sons and daughters of God. They may have certain inclinations which are powerful and which may be difficult to control. Most people have inclinations of one kind or another at various times. If they do not act upon these inclinations, then they can go forward as do all other members of the Church. If they violate the law of chastity and the moral standards of the Church, then they are subject to the discipline of the Church, just as others are....We want to help these people, to strengthen them, to assist them with their problems and to help them with their difficulties. But we cannot stand idle if they indulge in immoral activity, if they try to uphold and defend and live in a so-called same-sex marriage situation. To permit such would be to make light of the very serious and sacred foundation of God-sanctioned marriage and its very purpose, the rearing of families" (Gordon B. Hinckley, Ensign, Nov. 1998, 71).

Then again...I always think about all of the children in orphanages who will never be adopted...Isn't having a loving family even if they are gay better than no loving family at all? If I knew that my child could either live in an orphanage her whole life or go to a nice gay family, which would I choose?

Gratitude and Thank you cards

Now that he's older, he is able to write a short sentence in a card. However writing more than one card at a time is overwhelming so we space them out and do one a day.

I think it is very important to write thank you cards more than just saying thank you because it helps teach my kids to express their thanks. Though many people feel a verbal thank you is enough, I feel learning to write thank you cards is a good thing to teach my kids. I really like this quote to remember how important it is to teach my children to give thanks.

"Often we feel grateful and intend to express our thanks but forget to do so or just don’t get around to it. Someone has said that 'feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.' "- Thomas S. Monson

Moreover, I want my children to be grateful for all gifts and learning to express thanks for them, even if it isn't exactly what they were expecting or wanted. It will hopefully help them remember that it is the thought that counts and that gift giving is an expression of love.?

So while a child may not be able to write a full thank you card on their own until they are 8-9, they can learn the habit of expressing thanks for presents from a young age by signing their name or drawing a picture in a homemade card. Another cute idea I read about was taking a picture of the child with their present and writing a note of thanks on the back of the picture.

This truly is the most wonderful time of the year. I love the focus on service and gratitude and the potential to teach these things to our children. I never think it lasts long enough, but it’s important to take advantage of all the opportunities we have to serve.

Helping our children focus on something more than the gifts they hope to receive can be a challenge… it can seem downright impossible. We are bombarded with commercial after commercial advertising the latest gadgets, toys, and clothes.

Thanksgiving provides opportunity for family to discover one another, bond and express gratitude for the blessing of being family. ?As I remembered my own family Thanksgiving traditions, I recognized that the passing on of family recipes is but one-way families define and recreate themselves.

Below are a few ideas and considerations to help nurture family bonds between generations:

Cooking Lessons: Grandparents enjoy sharing memories associated with longstanding family recipes. Try to create opportunity for multi-generational cooking; as this is one-way children can become acquainted with extended family on a more personal level. See Cooking with Children?

Children will internalize the feelings and experiences they encounter through these relationships and incorporate them into a definition of who they are. When they experience affirmative relationships, children will build confidence in their own merit as individual people.

It is imperative then, that parents, being the first point of relationship contact for a child, set the groundwork for the development of a healthy self-esteem. Parents can facilitate this process by exhibiting 4 basic behaviours to their children on a consistent basis.

Support for Children

Parents provide a safe haven for children where they come to express their dreams and aspirations, their fears and their failures and know that their parents will listen. It is a place of retreat when things go wrong. Children will know that their parents' "place" offers a supportive framework that they can lean on, gather strength and be encouraged to carry on.

Building Your Teenage Daughter's Self-Esteem in an Image-Conscious Culture

I'll never forget what my mother made me do as a young teenager the first time I ever came home crying because I thought I was ugly and no one at school liked me. She stood me in front of the bathroom mirror and had me repeat, "I'm beautiful. I KNOW I'm beautiful. No one can convince me I'm not beautiful." The whole experience felt so silly that soon laughter was coming out of me instead of tears. I thought the whole idea was goofy. Little did I know how strong an influence these positive affirmations would have on my self-confidence and self-esteem the older I got.

My mother didn't technically come up with this idea on her own. In fact, a couple months prior, I came home from school recounting an incident I'd witnessed between a girl in my class and an older girl in the next grade up who I thought was the coolest of the cool. The older girl had overheard the younger girl bad-mouthing her on her looks. Confident in herself, the older girl approached the younger and said: "First of all, I KNOW I'm beautiful, so you can stop telling people I'm not. Secondly, it takes a really insecure person to put someone else down to make herself look better." After gawking at the incident and admiring the older girl's confidence, I told mom about the whole thing. Little did I know Mom would forever remember the incident and require me to compliment myself in the mirror any time in the future I ever expressed insecurity with my looks.

While my mother's technique for building self-esteem might not work for all teenage girls (after all, for some girls, it could lead to equally unhealthy arrogance), I believe positive affirmations can be a key part of building self-esteem in a teenage daughter. You can adapt your own, with examples being: "I am beautiful inside and out", "I have something to offer", or "I am confident and worthy of love."

Another way is to sit down and talk with your daughter about the importance of inner, spiritual beauty. This involves a serious discussion on how cultural and societal standards of beauty are not what make someone truly beautiful. True beauty, you can explain, is defined by one's actions, how one treats others, and by one's heart. A particularly fitting and timeless scripture that contrasts physical and spiritual beauty is 1 Peter 3:3-4, which can be used as a discussion point for people of faith.

Talking to your daughter about the magazines she reads is important. Many fashion magazines not only feature terrible celebrity role-models demonstrating that girls should dress "sexy" to get attention from guys, but many magazines also promote insecurity in teen girls by setting up paper-thin, airbrushed models caked with makeup as a standard for beauty. Explain to your daughter the difference between chasing an unrealistic and unattainable standard of beauty and taking care of her body for her overall health. Finally, it's important to explain to your daughter the difference between dressing attractively and dressing to attract. While your daughter's friends may be wearing skin-tight, low-cut or super short items of clothing, you can explain that girls wearing clothing like this attract the wrong kind of attention young guys who flock to these girls for their bodies, not their hearts and minds. Explain to your daughter that dressing like this does not reflect confidence but insecurity, because they believe that dressing provocatively is the only way to get noticed. Find an apartment in Bangkok

Ah yes, the joy of apartment hunting! If you are reading this article then chances are good you are looking for an apartment or condo in Bangkok to rent. Perhaps you are already in Bangkok living in a hotel or serviced apartment.

Fortunately, finding a suitable place to live in Bangkok is much cheaper and much easier than in most cities in the world. That’s actually one of the great perks of living in Thailand – the cheap costs of accomodation.

I have broken this article series into several topics such as location, apartment type, websites etc, so you can just skip to the topic you like or read everything. Happy hunting!

Location, location, location

The first thing you want to consider when looking for an apartment in Bangkok is location. This is true everywhere, but in Bangkok it gets even more important.
Bangkok is a chaotic city traffic wise. Though people often excaggerate how bad it is, you really don’t want to live far away from were you are going to work, study or hang out. By far, the most important thing in my opinion is to live close to either the Skytrain system (BTS) or the metro (MRT). These two modern systems are great for getting around in Bangkok and they cover most of the city. Some exceptions are if you need to live in Banglamphu or Ramkhamhaeng areas where there is no connection.

So, the first step is narrow your search down to a specific area. If you are going to work in Sukhumvit Asok for example, look for an apartment that is either close to the area itself or not more than 5 Skytrain stations away. Even more important is to look for an apartment that is in within walking distance of the Skytrain or Metro. 1 kilometer (or mile) is considerably longer in Bangkok, when you have to walk outside in the tropical heat on crowded, bad pavements. You can of course choose to live farther away as there will usually be motorcycle taxi’s ready to take you up and down the Soi for a few baht.

The Development of Self-Esteem: Parenting Behaviours That Boost a Child's Self Worth

The development of self-esteem begins during infancy and is primarily built from positive interactions children have with their parents.

The development of a child's self-esteem unfolds with the perceptions of those closest to them (parents, siblings or caregivers) and then expands, as the child gets older, to outside the nuclear family. Children will internalize the feelings and experiences they encounter through these relationships and incorporate them into a definition of who they are. When they experience affirmative relationships, children will build confidence in their own merit as individual people.

It is imperative then, that parents, being the first point of relationship contact for a child, set the groundwork for the development of a healthy self-esteem. Parents can facilitate this process by exhibiting 4 basic behaviours to their children on a consistent basis.

Support for Children

Parents provide a safe haven for children where they come to express their dreams and aspirations, their fears and their failures and know that their parents will listen. It is a place of retreat when things go wrong. Children will know that their parents' "place" offers a supportive framework that they can lean on, gather strength and be encouraged to carry on.

Parents Empower Children

As children grow parents bestow onto them more and more autonomy and authorize a sense of independence. From learning to tie their own shoes to driving a car, parents instill confidence in their children to try new things and tackle chores and problems on their own. Parents recognize their children's strengths and highlight them so children begin to use their strengths to make decisions and choose career paths that are right for them.

Unconditional Love From Parents

Parents continue to demonstrate and communicate their adoration for their children, no matter what their children have done. Parents see their child’s mis-behaviour as opportunities for their child to learn and grow. Parents help misbehaved children learn from their mistakes, guide them to make amends for their wrong doing and help them to choose appropriate behaviours the next time.

Faith in a Child's Capabilities

Parents trust that their children will learn right from wrong. As their children grow, parents give them opportunities to exercise problem solving and negotiation skills. Parents set their children up for social and academic success based on individual character strengths and allow their children to make mistakes and learn from them. Parents communicate trust and belief in their children’s ability to succeed, right from learning to feed independently, to taking their first steps, to going off to university.

Through a consistent showing of these parenting behaviours, children get positive reinforcement of specific self-esteem attributes. Children who receive support are strengthened; those who are empowered feel encouraged; children who know unconditional love learn to love themselves and when children know that their parents have faith in them, they are fulfilled as a human beings.

Building Your Teenage Daughter's Self-Esteem in an Image-Conscious Culture

I'll never forget what my mother made me do as a young teenager the first time I ever came home crying because I thought I was ugly and no one at school liked me. She stood me in front of the bathroom mirror and had me repeat, "I'm beautiful. I KNOW I'm beautiful. No one can convince me I'm not beautiful." The whole experience felt so silly that soon laughter was coming out of me instead of tears. I thought the whole idea was goofy. Little did I know how strong an influence these positive affirmations would have on my self-confidence and self-esteem the older I got.

My mother didn't technically come up with this idea on her own. In fact, a couple months prior, I came home from school recounting an incident I'd witnessed between a girl in my class and an older girl in the next grade up who I thought was the coolest of the cool. The older girl had overheard the younger girl bad-mouthing her on her looks. Confident in herself, the older girl approached the younger and said: "First of all, I KNOW I'm beautiful, so you can stop telling people I'm not. Secondly, it takes a really insecure person to put someone else down to make herself look better." After gawking at the incident and admiring the older girl's confidence, I told mom about the whole thing. Little did I know Mom would forever remember the incident and require me to compliment myself in the mirror any time in the future I ever expressed insecurity with my looks.

While my mother's technique for building self-esteem might not work for all teenage girls (after all, for some girls, it could lead to equally unhealthy arrogance), I believe positive affirmations can be a key part of building self-esteem in a teenage daughter. You can adapt your own, with examples being: "I am beautiful inside and out", "I have something to offer", or "I am confident and worthy of love."

Another way is to sit down and talk with your daughter about the importance of inner, spiritual beauty. This involves a serious discussion on how cultural and societal standards of beauty are not what make someone truly beautiful. True beauty, you can explain, is defined by one's actions, how one treats others, and by one's heart. A particularly fitting and timeless scripture that contrasts physical and spiritual beauty is 1 Peter 3:3-4, which can be used as a discussion point for people of faith.

Talking to your daughter about the magazines she reads is important. Many fashion magazines not only feature terrible celebrity role-models demonstrating that girls should dress "sexy" to get attention from guys, but many magazines also promote insecurity in teen girls by setting up paper-thin, airbrushed models caked with makeup as a standard for beauty. Explain to your daughter the difference between chasing an unrealistic and unattainable standard of beauty and taking care of her body for her overall health. Finally, it's important to explain to your daughter the difference between dressing attractively and dressing to attract. While your daughter's friends may be wearing skin-tight, low-cut or super short items of clothing, you can explain that girls wearing clothing like this attract the wrong kind of attention young guys who flock to these girls for their bodies, not their hearts and minds. Explain to your daughter that dressing like this does not reflect confidence but insecurity, because they believe that dressing provocatively is the only way to get noticed. Encourage your daughter to set herself apart through her achievements, her friendly personality and her kindness toward others, the marks of true beauty. (Also see a previous post here)

You want to make sure that you get a relaxing atmosphere for the person before giving them the massage. Get some relaxing music playing, light a few candles, and of course the aromatherapy factor is going to play a major role, because they will smell the oils and this will help them even more to get relaxed.
